Chapter Thirty Five
Wednesday
November 19, 1997
I’ve been at the police station all day by now. Andrew and I are tired, hungry and just want to go home. Detective Newbold has been gone for hours now so we’ve just been hanging around the station. There isn’t much the police can do to entertain Andrew. He was given a measly ruler to play with that says Blackfoot Police Department, but there aren’t any toys around. I daydream that a single whack on the back of the hand with this ruler will be enough to fix this quandary.
A female officer approaches me and says she is going to drive us home now. As she escorts us out of the building into the cold evening, I look up and notice the dark, clear sky. As I gaze at the stars, I wonder to myself, How did this whole mess get started? What is going to happen next? I silently wipe away a tear that has run down my cheek as we get into the police car. Andrew is staring at the lights, gun, and controls as we slowly pull out of the parking lot and head toward Dad’s house.
As we approach the house, we notice there are still several cars in the driveway. The lights are all ablaze inside, and I can see Dad through the dining room picture window that doesn’t have any blinds or curtains, sitting at the kitchen table silhouetted by the dim light, with Detectives Newbold and Dotson seated on each side of him. Dad’s head is hanging in shame with his hands in his lap while Detective Newbold is filling out some paperwork. The female officer drives past the house, makes a u-turn, and pulls into the parking lot of our church a half a block away.
She turns to me and says, “I’m sorry, I was told they were done by now. But I can’t let you back in the house yet. What would you like to do?”
I take a deep breath and let it out slowly. I try to keep my voice down a bit so Andrew doesn’t get involved in the conversation, “Well, you’re right. There’s no way we can go back in the house yet. I really wish Andrew hadn’t even seen that much.”
I look around the parking lot and notice there are many cars here. I suddenly remember there is a scout meeting here tonight that Andrew should be attending. “Look,” I tell the officer, “why don’t we hang out here in the church until they’re done over there? There will be more for Andrew to do as there is a pack meeting right now, and it will be more natural for him than sitting around the police station. Do you think that would be okay?”
“That should be fine. But I’ll have to be nearby.”
“That’s okay, I just hope you can try to be inconspicuous. Do you have to come inside? I mean, people are really going to ask questions if we’re escorted into the church by a police officer.
